Hammock or hanging chair: which fits your space?

The Baylan & Co outdoor guide

A hammock gives you room to stretch out. A hanging chair creates a seated corner for reading or a quiet coffee. Choosing between them starts with how you want to relax—and the clear space available.

Cream double hammock on its curved timber stand

Stretch out.

The Double Hammock & Timber Stand suits a longer outdoor area where you can leave room around the frame.

420 × 150 × 120 cm

Frame length × width × height. The hammock bed is 200 × 150 cm.

  • Hammock and timber stand included
  • One or two people, up to 200 kg combined
  • Assembly required; supplied in two packages

Cream hanging chair with its freestanding black steel stand

Take a seat.

The Hanging Chair & Steel Stand uses a shorter footprint, with more height to check under a roof or pergola.

160 × 140 × 205 cm

Stand length × width × height. The chair measures 100 × 45 × 145 cm.

  • Chair and steel stand included
  • Maximum chair load 120 kg
  • Stand assembly and chair attachment required

Compare the whole frame, not just the fabric.

The hammock bed is 2 m long, but the assembled frame is 4.2 m long. Measure for the frame first. The hanging chair stand is 1.6 × 1.4 m at its footprint and 2.05 m high; that makes overhead cover just as important as floor space.

A smaller footprint still needs breathing room.

Neither set should be squeezed into a space exactly the size of its stand. Allow additional room for access and movement, following the supplied instructions. Keep nearby tables, walls and other obstacles clear of the movement area.

Three checks before you choose.

  1. Mark the footprint. Use removable markers suitable for the surface to outline either 420 × 150 cm for the hammock frame or 160 × 140 cm for the hanging chair stand. Keep everyday walkways and doors clear.
  2. Check above and around it. Measure roof height, posts and nearby furniture. Confirm suitable placement and additional clearance against the supplied instructions.
  3. Plan care and access. Consider where you will protect or store the fabric and how you will bring the packages into the space. Ask us for packed dimensions if your access is tight.

Which would we choose?

For lying back: choose the hammock when your space can accommodate the long frame plus access and movement room. Its 200 kg limit is the total combined load, not a per-person limit.

For a seated reading corner: choose the hanging chair if you have space for its stand and additional clearance, including above. It is a seat for one with a 120 kg maximum load.

For coffee together: consider a conventional two-chair setting instead. Our patio measuring guide walks through the dimensions of the Outdoor Coffee Corner Set.

Finish with one useful extra.

A Timber Outdoor Side Table provides a place for a book or drink. It measures 44.6 × 44.6 × 40.5 cm and is sold separately. Plan its position outside the hammock or chair's movement area.

Follow the supplied assembly and care instructions. Outdoor materials still need care and protection. The hanging chair pillow should be hand-washed by gentle pressing, not machine-washed.
